Peter Budd, Suite Española

for solo guitar.

This set of pieces was written as an introduction to flamenco guitar for classical players, to whom the rhythms and techniques of flamenco would bring new and interesting challenges.
Cádiz, a simple flamenco Tientos, introduces Suite Espanola with Phrygian melodic lines and harmony, giving it a Moorish flavour which is very typical to the flamenco region of Andalucia surrounding the city of Cádiz. The opening melody should be played slowly and expressively with plenty of vibrato.
The Zambra is a simple version of a typical dance from the Granada area of Andalucia. It uses sliding chord patterns intertwined with melodic passages.
Mi Farruca is the longest and most challenging piece in the set, but still within the capabilities of intermediate guitarists. The four-bar introduction is followed by a compás (rhythm section) of strums and rasgueados. This compás occurs several times, with some slight variation, throughout the piece. It is alternated with melodic sections which vary in difficulty. These can be changed in order or some could be omitted to make a shorter, or easier version, if desired.
The suite ends with a bright and cheerful Rumba, a popular modern flamenco style, incorporating a syncopated rhythm and strong melody.
